Chapter 27

The sun had just cleared the horizon and was burning off the early-morning haze. Across the table from Jordan, Pete looked out the driveway-facing window and stared at a foot-wide bloodstain soaked into the gravel. The grandfather clock in the living room chimed six times. It was still several hours before the others would get up.

Jordan took a sip of coffee and set the cup down on its saucer. “What’s on your mind, Pete? You aren’t dressed and drinking coffee at this time of day unless something kept you from sleeping.”

Pete jerked his head toward the window. “Somebody needs to scrape away that dried blood. Why advertise Henry’s murder?”

Jordan huffed. “Didn’t know we were expecting company.”

“We aren’t as far as I know, but why take chances?”

“Don can take care of it when he gets up. Any questions about today’s assignment?”

“Seriously? I can pull that off with my eyes closed. I’ll be in and out of the Ormond house in under a half hour.” Pete locked eyes with Jordan as he held the warm coffee mug between his hands. “When are we leaving town?”

“In a few days. I’ve already reserved a large moving truck for the trip, so we’ll load all of the merchandise and the van inside. It’ll only be you and me, remember?”

Pete furrowed his brows. “I’m supposed to kill three guys before Saturday?”

Jordan’s eyes twinkled with interest. “Are you saying you can’t? All it takes is three consecutive shots. Take your pick of any gun in the house. It’ll be over with in a matter of seconds.”

“Why don’t you do it? It doesn’t seem like you take issue with killing people.”

“And you do? That’s news to me.”

Pete rocked back his chair and squeezed his head. “I don’t take issue with killing anyone if it’s necessary, but these guys are part of our group.”

Jordan stood and walked to the window. “Are you refusing to do it?”

“No, but—”

Pete’s rebuttal was abruptly cut off. “Good, then I want it done tomorrow. That’ll be one less thing to concern ourselves with when it’s time to head out. Make sure you’re thinking straight at two o’clock today. No mistakes, remember?”

Pete cursed under his breath as his boss dismissively turned toward the door and walked out. “Karma is a bitch, Jordan. Just wait and see.”
